Large Enhancements in Southern Hemisphere Satellite‐Observed Trace Gases Due to the 2019/2020 Australian Wildfires

چکیده
The 2019/2020 Australian wildfires emitted large quantities of atmospheric pollutant gases and aerosols. Using state-of-the-art near-real-time satellite measurements tropospheric composition, we present an analysis several trace their long-range transport, compare to the previous (2018/2019) fire season. Observations carbon monoxide (CO) show that emissions were so intense distinct plume managed circumnavigate Southern Hemisphere (SH) within a few weeks, with eastward propagation over South Pacific, America, Atlantic, Africa, Indian Ocean. Elevated methane levels also detected in January 2020 plumes defined using CO as tracer, even though sampling was restricted spatially by aerosols clouds. significant enhancements methanol (CH3OH) from fires, where CH3OH:CO enhancement ratios increased aged downwind Pacific indicating secondary in-plume CH3OH formation.

Greenhouse Effects due to Man-Mad Perturbations of Trace Gases.
Nitrous oxide, methane, ammonia, and a number of other trace constituents in the earth's atmosphere have infrared absorption bands in the spectral region 7 to 14 microm and contribute to the atmospheric greenhouse effect. The concentrations of these trace gases may undergo substantial changes because of man's activities. Extensive use of chemical fertilizers and combustion of fossil fuels may p...
متن کاملLarge cancellation, due to ozone recovery, of future Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation trends
[1] The role of stratospheric ozone recovery in the Southern Hemisphere climate system, in the coming decades, is examined by contrasting two 10‐member ensembles of Community Atmospheric Model (CAM3) integrations, over the period 2000–2060. Model integrations in the first ensemble are conducted with a complete set of forcings: greenhouse gas concentrations from the A1B scenario, SSTs from corre...
متن کاملAustralian shelf sediments reveal shifts in Miocene Southern Hemisphere westerlies
Global climate underwent a major reorganization when the Antarctic ice sheet expanded ~14 million years ago (Ma) (1). This event affected global atmospheric circulation, including the strength and position of the westerlies and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and, therefore, precipitation patterns (2-5). We present new shallow-marine sediment records from the continental shelf of Aus...
متن کاملPeriodic variability in the large-scale Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation.
Periodic behavior in the climate system has important implications not only for weather prediction but also for understanding and interpreting the physical processes that drive climate variability. Here we demonstrate that the large-scale Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation exhibits marked periodicity on time scales of approximately 20 to 30 days. The periodicity is tied to the Southern...
متن کاملPossible Dynamical Mechanisms for Southern Hemisphere Climate Change due to the Ozone Hole
The authors report a hypothesis for the dynamical mechanisms responsible for the strengthening of the Southern Hemisphere circumpolar winds from the lower stratosphere to the surface due to the ozone hole. A general circulation model forced by stratospheric ozone depletion representative of the ozone hole period successfully reproduced these observed changes. Investigation of the dynamical char...
